Blog Post #4

what students learn from podcasting
This website showed me how much, putting a podcast together, helps you comprehend new material. It is a great way for students to have fun, and learn at the same time. Making the videos, in the classroom, lets every student be involved. They all have to write a script for their video. It helps some students open up and express themselves. It is also really awesome, if you are learning a foreign language. The website says you have to hear a new vocabulary word, at least 70 times, before comprehending it.That really amazes me, but creating podcast and saying new words repeatedly helps you remember so much easier. The teacher mixes the audio clips up, and makes the students edit it. This makes students sound the words out, and make sure they put the scripts in the right order. Doing these podcast, helps students understand the new material, and remember how to pronounce the words, from having to say it aloud.

"Benefits of podcasting in the classroom"
Teacher podcasting in classroomThere are so many beneficial reasons why teachers should podcast, in their classroom! It helps teachers and students, to keep up with their work outside the classroom. It is very useful if your student gets sick! In the video, it shows how Emily's teacher makes podcast videos of all his lessons, then uploads them to itunes. This causes less stress on the student worrying about the test or homework they missed. Podcasting also lets the parents keep up with their child's schooling. The parents can see exactly what their child is learning, and all of the lessons that they have learned. I will defiantly be using podcasting in my classroom! I think it is awesome to put almost everything you do in your classroom, on the internet. It will also prevent students from missing assignments when they are absent.

"How to Podcast"
All you need to podcast is a microphone, computer, and a program, that you can upload your podcast to. There are a bunch of free websites that you can pick from. "How to create a podcast" is a video, that has great instructions, on how to make your own podcast. This video taught me everything I need to know to make my own podcast! You can do so much editing on your podcast with the programs. It is really awesome how you can make a podcast, and people all around the world can see it!

  1. "This website showed me how much, putting a podcast together, helps you comprehend new material. " The two commas should be removed from this sentence.

"...way for students to have fun, and learn at the same time. " Remove comma.

"Making the videos, in the classroom, lets every student be involved. " The two comas in this sentence are improperly used. When used they imply that they are non-restrictive, i.e. that they do not restrict the meaning. In this case in the classroom is restrictive since that is what you are discussing. If you were considering the utility of making videos outside the classroom you could not contend that the process "lets every student be involved." You need a lesson in commas. Consult a book line Elements of Style.

"It is also really awesome, if you are learning a foreign language." Remove comma.

"The website says you have to hear a new vocabulary word, at least 70 times, before comprehending it." Remove comma.

"That really amazes me, but creating podcast and saying new words repeatedly ..." Comma appropriate here. Podcast should be podcasts since it is plural. Or put an a before podcast and leave it singular.

"The teacher mixes the audio clips up, and makes the students edit it." Makes is a bit harsh. Why not this: The teacher mixes the audio clips. The students then edit them.? If you do not separate into two sentences the comma should not be used.

"This makes students sound the words out, and make sure..." Use makes in both places. Comma unnecessary.

"Doing these podcast, helps students understand the new material, and remember how to pronounce the words, from having to say it aloud." No commas. Podcasts not podcast.

OK enough on commas. Take a lesson or find out how and when to use commas. Go to the Writing Lab (Alpha East) for help. And I will stop my corrections of the plural form of podcast which is podcasts. You should use podcast and podcasts appropriately.

"...podcast, in their ..." No comma. I couldn't resist.
"... and students, to keep up ..." No comma.
"In the video, it shows ..." Unnecessary comma.
"I will defiantly be using..." Defiantly? I think you mean definitely.

Your content was OK but all those extra commas really got to me. Learn how to use commas properly.

  2. Hi Rachel, I enjoyed reading your post. We look at a few things the same way. One of those being that the students writing their own script can help them express themselves and show who they really are. I have always found that writing for me is the best way to express myself. Another thing we agree on is the definite use of podcasting in our classroom. I plan on recording and posting every lesson that I teach, maybe give my students extra credit if they re-watch it before they do their homework that night at their house. I did notice all of the comma mistakes, and I looked for one that Doctor Strange might have missed and I could not find one. I surely and sincerely enjoyed reading your post. Good Luck with your future career.
